  • The Best Marketing Lie

I am amazed how people are ready and willing to accept things no matter how fake or distorted it might be. The best example of this is the rush to the fake concept of CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility.

By its very nature, it is a contradictory notion because, by nature, only living things can be responsible and a corporation is not a living thing no matter how hard we try to conceive of it as such. The people who work in a company are responsible because, by their nature, they are alive although some might disagree with me after they come across some bureaucrats. Companies are not. Even if we were to accept that companies are living entities, the issue then becomes whose morality do we use in making social judgments? The Chairman of the board? The Board members? The management of the company? The shareholders? And then, you have the issue of what happens when they are conflicted due to religious, political, social differences? Whose morality do we go for?

This is just a wonderful ploy for marketing companies but without trying to look obvious. If a company wanted to donate, donate. There is nothing wrong with marketing that donation as a way of promoting the business. Just don't try to insult our collective intelligence by saying that this is altruistic and that the company wants nothing out of the donation. If it did not, don't mention it.

I am all for people and companies donating their time and money and to promote that they did so should they want to as it is their time or effort. There is nothing wrong with giving. Just don't be obnoxious and take us as fools by saying that is was from the heart if the purpose was to promote one's self.

    The Best Lie in Business

Many people use guilt to get things done. We guilt our children into doing the chores. We guilt our family members to doing things they really don't like. And we guilt our business partners into situations that they are uncomfortable with because guilt is a great way of getting people to do things without much of an effort.

    Sharia - The Business Word

Let me start off by clarifying one thing about this topic--Sharia. It is the Arabic word for the word path (read law or way of life). The word for street in Arabic share the same root (sha ra a) because they have the same meaning of path. If I say this is Mishal's sharia, it simply means that this is Mishal's law or his way of life.
